The next instalment of our popular TWIST fencing competition for children will take place at RTWFC on Sunday 9th March from 1030am-5pm. This event will bring together club fencers with students from Brighton College, Mayfield and probably two or three other clubs as well to compete in four different groupings of school years.
The timings, age groups and weapon sizes are as follows:
1030am-130pm – Years 4-5 (size 0), Years 6-7 (size 2), Years 8-9 – boys only (size 2)
130-430pm – Years 8-9 – girls only (size 2), Years 10-13 (size 5)
At the competition, fencers will be matched against pupils from other schools/clubs and other RTWFC classes with a similar level of experience and in the same age group.
All kit is provided as necessary and medals will be awarded to the top 4 finishers in each category. However, if you have your own kit please do bring it – the club has very few size 0 epees and not many body wires, for example, so do bring these if you have them.
The cost is £15 per person. For insurance purposes, unless your school’s sports policy covers fencing outside your school, a minimum of a Starter membership of British Fencing is required, which costs approximately £13 per person for a year. Arrival: Aim to arrive an hour before your event’s start time.

Cost: £15 per event for most fencers. However, if you’ve already paid to attend the 1030am-12pm club class on Sunday, are in the Years 4-5 and 6-7 age groups, or you are in the boys Years 8-9 event, you only need to pay a £4 to do the TWIST. This is because the competition will partly be taking place within the class you’ve already paid for.

Format: One round of poules (to 5 points) then knockout matches (to 10, 12 or 15, as appropriate); if possible, we’ll offer a ‘Plate’ comp for those knocked out of the main draw of the Years 10-13 event in the first elimination round.
Clothing: legs must be fully covered – for Years 8-9 and 10-13 with sports socks & breeches, for everyone else with ‘sporty trousers’ with pockets zipped or taped shut – although long socks and breeches are preferred for these age groups too.
Refreshments: No food & drink will be available at the venue, so please come prepared
Parking: Parking is not permitted at the venue, so please park locally
