Neale Thomas joins The Royal Tunbridge Wells Fencing Club

The Royal Tunbridge Wells Fencing Club is very happy to announce the appointment of Maitre Neale Thomas to the Coaching staff

Neale started fencing in 1971 under Prof Alf Mallard, competing regularly at schoolboy level for a few years in three weapons.  Having given up the sport through his university days it wasn’t until his 30’s he was bitten with the bug again and returned to the sport.  He competed on the Senior World Cup circuit and at the Commonwealth Championships in Malaysia 1998 & Australia in 2002.

When he stopped competing in 2003, he was asked to coach at a local club in Wimbledon.  His children started fencing and he eventually joined the cadet & junior GB coaching team.  In 2010/11 he joined the FIE coach education program & trained under Octavian Zidaru in Zagreb and Budapest, gaining his FIE Maitre D’Armes.  He is a BF level 5 registered Epee coach.

He has coached numerous fencers to Cadet & Junior World & European Championship level, his own children making ten Junior European & World Championships alone, and Gareth making a L16 finish at Junior Worlds.  From 2013 to 2016 was involved with the BF program as GB Talent coach.

Today he is a full time professional coach, coaching Fencers and Pentathletes in Epee at various clubs & schools through Surrey & the south east.

Neale will be running the Sunday session and working primarily with the Teenager and Adult members in preparation for competitions .We look forward to a fruitful and successful term under his tutelage.

British Fencing AASE Programme

If you are a 16-18 year old fencer who has completed GCSE year and are ranked in the top 40 (for your age on any national ranking list) you are eligible to apply for the British Fencing AASE programme.

What is AASE?
It is a Level 3 qualification based around Pearson Edexcel qualifications in Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance and Understanding Sports Performance; designed for fencers who have the realistic potential to achieve excellence and are seeking to perform at the highest level. The programme will cover all areas of fencing and this innovative and exciting sporting programme will help you to develop as an athlete and fencer.

You can find more information and an application form on the British Fencing web site at http://www.britishfencing.com/development/aaseprogramme/ or email Neil Brown neil.brown@britishfencing.com.

James Russell – GB U20 selection

Congratulations to 17 year old James Russell who has been selected as part of the GB U20 team to fence in the Luxembourg World Cup in September.
Unfortunately James had a tough time at the 2016-17 Junior U20 Nationals due to taking part in a 50 mile overnight walk 3 nights before with his school. This left him exhausted to the point of collapse in the Last 16 bout, but he managed to continue and went on to finish 6th after putting up a huge effort in the quarter final against the GB #1.
Once again many congratulations to both James and his Coach Steven Paul.
